We all have grown up with this pet statement of our grandparents or parents – “ If you had drunk adequate water, you wouldn’t have fallen in this condition..” We belong to society where water is given as a recommended tonic for every ailment you can think of. No matter what illness you go through, Headache? Drink more water. Stomach upset? Drink more water. Bad skin? Drink more water! If we say it in a summarise way, they have ALL PROBLEM-ONE SOLUTION approach regarding water.

Staying hydrated makes you feel sharper, perform better in day to day life, have more energy throughout day, get more work done and you give your body what it needs to help ensure better health. Our oldies had a secret to live long life and that was drinking a big glass of water immediately after getting up and they made this schedule for everyday.

Since most of us are aware with the importance of drinking water, know that water is an ailment for many of the illnesses. Even, we keep on transferring this knowledge relating to wellness through water to our next generation. As kids across the country are taught to carry their water bottles. And this learning is given to them before making them learn any alphabet.

In order to run a balanced healthy lifestyle, water is an essential. Water requirement for everyday is 2-3 litres, though this recommendation varies depending on many factors. The recommendation for water consumption varies as it is based on age, weight, sex, activity level, and the climate you live in. Many of us drink water only when they feel thirst, and most of the time pacify their thirst with other liquids other than water. Are other liquids healthy? Answer is “No”, they contain lot of artificial ingredients or flavouring agents. The best solution to quench hour thirst is water because it’s the purest and healthy for our body.

There are plenty of benefits of drinking water but before we move, we should also know what are the reasons of dehydration, situations when you think other tasks are more important than to quench your thirst with a glass of water.

Reasons of Dehydration

Dehydration is when fluid intake is less and output is more or drinking enough fluid but losing more fluid than you take in. Loss of fluid is through sweat, tears, vomiting, urine or diarrhoea. Severity of dehydration depends on a number of factors, such as climate, level of physical activity and diet. Sometimes, you may not replace the water you lose because of following:

1. You’re busy and forget to drink enough.
2. You don’t realize you’re thirsty.
3. You don’t feel like drinking because you have a sore throat or mouth sores, or abdominal discomfort.

Signs and Symptoms of Dehydration

Signs of dehydration include:

  • Increased thirst
  • Dry mouth
  • Not peeing very much
  • Concentrated urine or dark yellow urine
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Sunken eyes
  • Lack of energy
  • Fainting
  • Benefits of drinking water

    It is normal to lose water from your body every day by sweating, breathing, peeing and through tears and saliva. You can replace the lost liquid by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. Here’s what happens to your body every time you have a big drink of the wet stuff.

    1) It nourishes the digestive system

    Water helps in maintaining fluid balance by helping transport of nutrients in the body. Water acts as a medium for transportation of nutrients. It is the key component of digestion and keeps food moving through the intestines. In case of constipation, a large glass of water will make passing a stool painless and much easier.

    2) It increases brain power and improves mental health

    For energy, the brain relies on water. Drinking water helps in number of ways which includes improving concentration, cognition, proper balancing of your mood and emotions. Also, it is responsible for increasing blood flow and oxygen to the brain. Water requirement to brain increases during hot summary days.

    3) Water helps in weight management or weight loss

    Water increases metabolism in form of REE (Resting energy expenditure), the amount of calories you burn while resting and also pacifies your thirst. Natural way to reduce appetite is to have plenty of water before meals. It helps consuming fewer calories as taking water before meals makes partial fulfilment of satiety. Water is best replacement of high calorie drinks like sugary beverages and alcohol.

    4) It cures headaches

    Dehydration leads to increase in serotonin levels which causes headaches. Studies have shown water helps in relieving headache symptoms in most dehydrated individuals. One should focus more on drinking adequate water throughout day and increase consumption of foods that possess water.

    5) It brings glow on skin

    Dehydrated skin looks more dry, wrinkled, sunken eyes and skin starts losing elasticity. Drinking water as per recommended amount makes difference upto some extent. Drinking water helps in maintaining the optimal body temperature and keeping the skin moist.

    Body flushes out harmful toxins in form of sweat and urination. It is also helpful in prevention of kidney stones and provides protection against urinary tract infections (UTI).

    Our body is capable of doing natural detoxification through the use of its lungs, liver and kidneys but when we give it more task than it can handle such as when we consume excess of junk or too many drinks over the weekend. Having adequate water and electrolytes makes a big difference in maintaining health and preventing injury. If you don’t like plain drinking water, you can spice it up with a few slices of citrus fruit or some refreshing herbs like lime, mint etc.
